Hi everyone. Long time no visit on here...
I have a question that I hope you all can help me with. So I bought a bike a few months ago, its an 05 Victory Vegas 8-Ball. It's been a lot of fun until...
I was dumb and left the key on one day. Came home and the battery was totally dead. So, being the genius that I am (note sarcasm) I decide that I am going to try to jump the thing.
So, i hook up jumpers to the GTO. I try to start the bike, but it sounds like the solenoid is not connecting the starter to the bike. So, i get a brick and wedge the throttle on the car to 2k rpm. Same problem. Before I can get the cables off the battery, smoke begins to rise from under the seat...
Now, the ECM is under there, as well as something called an "auto-cancel" module.
I just got the battery charged, and my light and brake light are acting very strange. No fuel pump activation, no start.
Do you think I fried my ECM too? Just want to get some input before shelling out 600 bucks...
Thanks! |

Does it have an immobilizer or starter interlock? I don't know much about modern motorcycle security systems but it's a possibility if it follows standard automotive practice. If the battery dies it may need to be initialized somehow. Does the starter even operate normally with a fresh battery? The battery is the heart of any charging system and if it's dead flat, a jump might not be able to overcome that void. You've verified a lack of fuel or spark under cranking? What does it use as a trigger for injection and spark? You've got to confirm fuel pressure, then make sure the ECU is receiving proper inputs before condemning it. It's never good to "let the smoke out", though, because everyone knows that electrical systems operate on smoke transfer, and when it comes out they stop working. Good luck! |

First, it has no security or "immobilizer" that I know of.
The starter DID spin before the magic smoke was released, but now does not turn. The fuel pump usually primes the system for a few seconds once the kill switch is switched to on, and the started will spin with the button. None of that now happens. Now, I get an abnormal series of lights on the indicator board and a flash of a brake light half of the relays for flashers click once and stay pegged.
I am fairly sure I fried one of the modules under the seat, I am just not sure what this "auto-cancel" module does or how I can verify where my fault lies. Both it and the ECM have 20+ connections in and out of it. |

Pretty sure you fried it. Bikes aren't designed to be jumped from cars...
Any number of battery chargers would've done the job without smoking the electrical systems...
There are plenty of bike-tech-saavy people here: www.sloriders.com |

Well... there's very rarely an issue jumping a bike off of a car if you do it right. However, doing it right in this case means NOT starting the car.
Good luck, and I hope that wasn't TOO expensive of a mistake. |
