I haven't been around much lately, but still poke my head in and lurk around every once in a while. I thought I'd show some build pics of a car I've been working on. Its my dad's 1960 356 Super 90. Its not a strict restoration by any means, but being built to be a great driver. We've been working on it off & on for a couple years, been a fairly slow pace until we finally got really motivated to make it to the anual 356 club "North / South" meet April 30 -May 1, at Laguna Lake Park off of Madonna in good old SLO town. Hopefully. . . I repeat, HOPEFULLY, it will be done by then.

Ok, from the start. Here's how we brought it home, bought with paint & bodywork done, no interior, and engine in questionable shape. All the bits are in boxes. All you have to do is put it together. . . . right.

The first step was to get in under the car and undercoat / paint black the belly.

Then we put the suspension back together and rebuilt / installed the brakes

rebuilt the pedal assy.

And install fuel lines / brake lines / cables

The transaxle was sent out for minor overhaul and to get a couple improvements, and here it is back at home.

The insides of the doors tend to trap water, so we applied extra undercoating in there, and installed rebuilt window mechanisms, and latch mechanisms.

The brake drums were pretty funky, so we put them on a lathe to clean them up. Came out pretty nice.

and modeling the wheels that we're putting on, 15x6's . . . MEATY (not)

We got the trans-axle back installed, and now the car sits on its tires. (these wheels / tires came w/ the car and are just rollers)

The trunk was painted and prepped for gas tank install. Some other little bits are getting installed at this time also, lights, etc.

And the gas tank, modified for the new fuel system. (I'm still not happy with this and want to add a surge tank, but will do that this summer).

Here the rear lights and badges are installed.

This is the rear bumper being rebuilt with new rubber and aluminum "deco's"

The side strips and badge installed.

And the headlights, hood badge, etc. installed.

Fast forward to 6 months ago, we have most the interior installed, well the hard to do bits anyway. New headliner, dash pad, & door panels. We let pros do this.

After we installed the Dynamat. Good for thermal and noise insulation. Overkill, IDK.

Back to the pro's to get the windshield and rear window installed.

And now to switch gears, the engine, now fully assembled. This started out as a 1600cc. Somewhere along the line someone put a 1720 kit on it, but its pretty junky stuff, so we ordered a bunch of stuff and sent it to Competition Engineering for machine work (world famous for the best 356 engine machining). The cylinders are nikosil coated aluminum "Nickies" from LN engineering, along with lightweight JE pistons and R&R rods (i think). We also ordered an "SX-2" cam and are getting larger intake valves (40mm). CE unshrouded the heads and cleaned up the ports considerably.
We are also converting to 12v, so an alternator kit was installed.

. . . and now for the big surprise, we're going EFI!

Here is the motor mostly assembled. You'll notice we've gone distributorless, and on the back of the fan shroud have added the fuel pressure regulator. The exhaust is a Bursch that we had coated

The throttle bodies & fuel rails are on their way. Hopefully we'll be able to install them this weekend, then we can get the motor in the car.

All that will be left is installing the seats, steering wheel, carpets, door weather seals, engine tuning, and some suspension tweeks to dial in the ride heights and set the alignment. Think it can be done by the end of April?

Very nice. As far as getting it done by april teak your time. There has been a lot of work put into that car and it would be worth it to finish it right rather than rush it.

Welcome back. The car looks great. There are a couple guys in SLO that I used to hang out with that build 356 racers. Wolff Racing or something along those lines. Good luck with the car though, I can't wait to see how the EFI turns out.

I'm fairly jealous... I'd literally hand over the keys to my R32 and anything else I own.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

The color is supposed to be Aetna Blue, but does look lighter, and have more gray in it like Meissen blue, but isn't that pale in person. I think it looks better than either Aetna or Meissen, a good mix.

Interior was done by Award Interiors in Sacramento, using kit / leather from Autos International. It came out pretty nice, but they had to do the dash pad twice, and still can't get the wrinkles out of the factory seats, and they had to do the seat pads twice because the first time the cushioning was way too soft. It would have been cheaper / faster to send the car to San Diego and have Autos Int'l do the work.

Good news is that the Throttle Bodies came in last night, but the bad news is I'm stuck at home today, so I won't get to work on it till tomorrow. Hopefully engine is still going in this weekend.

That is some impressive stuff, Dan. I'm not a big Porsche fan, but I certainly appreciate the time & energy you've put into this. I'd sure like to see it completed, in person.
